Happy Thrifting: Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market

Today I want to introduce to you a flea market I’ve been to twice now: Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market. It is located along the scenic Delaware River in Lambertville, New Jersey, right across the border from Pennsylvania. The flea market has been open since the late 1960s, so you know it is a good one. Plus, it is open year-round and three days a week: Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Some flea markets are only open seasonally and that’s a bummer when you really have a hankering to find some neat treasures, but nothing is open! The name Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market is a nod to the man who…

    Back Staircase Before and After

Our Colonial Farmhouse has a front staircase and a back staircase. The front staircase has gorgeous trim work and is located in the center of our home. The stairs made an appearance in my music room post. Then there is the back staircase. Oh, the back staircase. These stairs are tucked away in a far corner of our home and are a shortcut from the kitchen up to the bedrooms. When we bought the Colonial Farmhouse the back staircase was steep, narrow and ugly. The stairs weren’t inherently ugly. It was more bad bridesmaid dress kind of ugly. However, I saw the potential in those stairs. If fact, it was…

    Merry Christmas 2019

I found a Christmas poem that seems to ring pretty true. The Four Stages of Life 1. You believe in Santa Claus. 2. You don’t believe in Santa Claus. 3. You are Santa Claus. 4. You look like Santa Claus. -Anonymous I may well be on my way to looking like Santa Claus after just ATTEMPTING to park at the mall this weekend. Spoiler alert: I didn’t park. I left and went home and was never happier. Whatever stage of life you are in right now, I hope you revel in it this holiday season. From our family to yours, we wish you a happy Christmas. Thank you for continuing…

    Happy List: #147

Hello! The Christmas countdown is on! Are you ready? I’m pretty sure I’m ready. If I’m not, I’m blissfully unaware, so no one burst my bubble! This week on the blog I shared the board games that Handy Husband is currently loving. He and my son played one of them (Burgle Bros.) earlier this week on a light homework night. I also shared a bunch of home photos that are giving me all sorts of winter home inspiration. Now here is the Happy List. Wait. That didn’t sound exciting enough. Here’s the list you’ve all been waiting for. The one! The only! THE HAPPY LIST!!! SKANSEN MUSEUM At Skansen Museum…

Winter Home Inspiration from New Jersey

One of the reasons I’m enjoying living on the East Coast is that there is a seemingly limitless supply of old home eye candy. You’d think this feast for the eyes would get, well, old, but it hasn’t. Here is some winter home inspiration from New Jersey for your viewing pleasure today. This blue home covered in snow looks like a real-life doll house with that gorgeous white trim all covered in snow. I’m also swooning over the little balcony on the second story. SWOONING. I drive by this home frequently and this isn’t even its best angle. It’s not even the front of the house. This is the left…

Five Board Games Handy Husband Recommends

There are five board games Handy Husband recommends you all try this holiday season while you’re home hanging out with your loved ones. He says these five board games are guaranteed to help you pass the time more enjoyably. Guaranteed, huh? That’s a pretty strong word coming from someone who is not going to give you your money back. I asked Handy Husband if he would write this blog post himself, so you’d get a first person account of why he recommends these particular board games. After all, he’s the person who appreciates how well a game is designed, how often it can be played without getting predictable, the quality…

    Happy List: #146

Hello, friends! It’s been a week. Today being a Friday the 13th seems appropriate!  We received a fresh blanket of snow this week and I had a child home sick for three days with walking pneumonia. Everyone else seems to be teetering on the edge of the germ abyss. And to think, it’s not even technically winter yet! This week on the blog was all about our Christmas tree. I shared our piano pedal tree topper on Monday and our piano hammer and piano wire ornaments on Wednesday. Thank you for all your kind comments about my creative repurposing of piano parts. Here’s the Happy List! PAPER CHAIN This free…

    Piano Hammer Christmas Ornaments

Piano Hammer Christmas Ornaments. Trust me. This is a thing now. Okay, okay. It is probably only a thing on my Christmas tree! Every trend starts somewhere, right? To recap, we took apart an old upright piano because we could not find anyone to take it off our hands. It took more time and effort than we want to admit. On the plus side, we have been repurposing the piano parts. For instance, I turned the piano harp into wall art. I donated the piano keys to our local middle school for an art project. We turned the back of the piano into a garage workbench. The piano hammers, in…

    Piano Pedal Tree Topper

When I set out to decorate a music-themed Christmas tree this year, I didn’t plan on creating a piano pedal tree topper. It just sort of happened on a whim. Was it a good whim? It’s hard to tell, but you know me, I’m running with it! If you’re new here, we took apart an old upright piano that was left in our Colonial Farmhouse when we purchased it. We’ve been repurposing the piano parts for other projects (like this piano harp art). That’s how today’s piano pedal tree topper came to be. Piano pedals are made of metal and these have a lovely patina from decades of use. They…

    Happy List: #145

Hello! I hope your December is off to a festive start! We had our first snowfall this week, so it is definitely feeling winter-y here. Due to the snow, the kids finally went back to school after an extended Thanksgiving break on Tuesday. I sure did miss them. This week on the blog I shared the Christmas wreath I made out of an antique car horn. I also shared the wreath that I added to our barn. That was fun. Oh! If you haven’t following along on Instagram or Facebook stories, I’ve been posting the progress on the build of our built-in desk. You can even see literal behind-the-scenes videos…
