Happy List: #301

quilt and blanket ladder in a farmhouse on the happy list

Hi! Welcome to this week’s Happy List. I’m delighted you are here.

This week on the blog I shared the visor I jazzed up with fabric paint. I gave the visor a retro stripe and I love wearing it. I also shared 17 uses for ceramic crocks and how to tell if your crocks are antiques and not reproductions.

On last week’s Happy List, I shared a graphic of glimmers. Glimmers are small moments that spark joy or peace. One of my readers commented that the Happy List is a glimmer for them.

*Cue all the mushy feelings.*

Thank you for all of your comments, support, likes, shares, etc. here and on social media. If you want to connect with us, you can always comment on this blog post or send an email here. You can also reach out on Instagram or Facebook.

Now, here’s the Happy List!

FLORAL DESIGN STUDIO

This stunning picture is of a floral design studio by Katie LeClercq Design Studio.

I’ll ask the question we’re all thinking. Do we have to be florists to have a floral design studio? Because I’d make myself right at home in a space like this! Check out more photos of this floral design studio here.

VINTAGE PATCH HAT

I frequently find inspiration from Sarah at Sadie Seasongoods. She’s been taking vintage patches that she finds while thrifting and adding them to brand-new hats. Such a good idea!

You should see how she uses the patches on shirts! Check it out here.

TIE-DYE COUCH

Tie-dye and couch are two terms I’ve never put together until now and, surprisingly, I’m here for it!

Perhaps that’s because this example of an IKEA couch that has a tie-dye cover is so well done. I’m not sure if they tie-dyed the existing couch cover or created a new, custom cover. Either way, I applaud the creativity.

If you love color, you’ll love this home. More photos of it can be found over at Domino.

STEALING SOMEONE’S THUNDER

Have you ever wondered where the phrase “stealing someone’s thunder” comes from? Well, wonder no more!

A playwright in 1709 named John Dennis wrote a play that needed a thunder sound effect. He had the idea to move around a piece of tin to get that sound. Unfortunately, his play was not a success and was canceled. However, someone took his thunder sound effect and used it in a performance of Macbeth.

Dennis was not happy and while the actual words he expressed are questioned, that’s where credit for the term “stealing my thunder” is given.

Read more about it over at Only Good News Daily.

P.S. I can’t remember if there was thunder when I took this picture, but it was definitely raining!

SLEEPING PORCH

I am enamored with the idea of a sleeping porch. To be able to sleep on an actual bed on a screened-in porch in the summer sounds delightful. I could be romanticizing that idea though.

Check out 13 cool sleeping porches over at Sunset Magazine.

HANDY TO HAVE – FATHER’S DAY GIFT IDEA

If you’re one of those “just in case” people who like to be prepared, have you seen these rechargeable mini air compressors? We got this in April and Handy Husband keeps it in his car. We have used it to put air in car tires, but we’ve also used it to fill bike tires and wheelbarrow tires too.

It’s so much easier than lugging the big air compressor out and I like the peace of mind if we’re on a road trip that we can always pump up a tire if we had to.

The air compressor is smaller than a brick, so it doesn’t take up much space. This would make a GREAT Father’s Day gift.

ONE GOOD THING

2023 Teacher of the Year, Rebecka Peterson, receive that honor, in part, for her daily blog One Good Thing. Along with contributors, they write about one good thing that happened while teaching that day. I read through many of the posts and it was delightfully refreshing.

Even with a hard day, these teachers were finding one good thing to focus on and it was a beautiful thing to witness and a good reminder regardless of our occupations to focus on the positive. If you need a pick-me-up, check out the blog here.

P.S. Speaking of teachers, I also listened to this story on NPR this week about how teacher mentors in Alaska are helping keep new teachers on the job. This approach has been so effective at teacher retention that when the program was slashed from the state budget, school districs banded together to pay for the program themselves.

GRILLED CHILI LIME BUTTER CORN ON THE COB

We all have goals…

This summer I’d like to up my corn on the cob game. Seems like a solid goal to me. HA!

This grilled chili lime corn on the cob recipe from Eat Well 101 looked delicious. In fact, I’m hungry now.

P.S. I can’t eat corn on the cob like a barbarian. I wish I could but I have to cut it off the cob. If I don’t, it gets stuck in my teeth and that’s the worst feeling, especially if we’re at a gathering and people want me to talk to them. Sorry! Can’t! Corn in the teeth!

POETRY MOMENT

It’s All Right by William Stafford

Someone you trusted has treated you bad.
Someone has used you to vent their ill temper.
Did you expect anything different?
Your work-better than some others’-has
languished,
neglected. Or a job you tried was too hard,
and you failed. Maybe weather or bad luck
spoiled what you did. That grudge, held against you
for years after you patched up, has flared,
and you’ve lost a friend for a time. Things
at home aren’t so good; on the job your spirits
have sunk. But just when the worst bears down
you find a pretty bubble in your soup at noon,
and outside at work a bird says, “Hi!”
Slowly the sun creeps along the floor;
it is coming your way. It touches your shoe.

Thank you for reading today’s Happy List.

Be good to yourself and others this weekend.

I’ll see you back here on Monday.
