Yes, you can hang a mirror on a peg rail. I’m here to show you how and share the unexpected item I used to make it happen.
I have a peg rail on the wall above a bedroom dresser. I mainly use this particular peg rail for hanging my everyday necklaces. What I did not have was a mirror above the dresser.
I realize this is a less common bedroom dresser feature in these modern times, but it sure is helpful when you’re trying to pick a necklace to wear.
There are two ways (at least) to hang a mirror on a peg rail:
First, you can hang it directly on the pegs themselves. That’s what I did. The hanging wire on the back of the mirror is resting on three of the pegs.
Second, you can remove the pegs, affix a screw or two to the rail, and hang the mirror from the screws using a sturdy sawtooth picture hanger, D-rings, or picture hanging wire. This solution may be easiest if you don’t have a top cap on your peg rail. The mirror would sit closer to the wall that way.
How to solve the problem of the mirror tipping away from the wall when hung from a peg rail:
If you hang a mirror or picture from a peg on a peg rail, and the mirror or picture tips forward from the wall, that can be a problem. There’s an easy way to fix it.
You need some blocking behind the mirror to hold it parallel to the wall.
Packing styrofoam (not the peanuts) can make great blocking for this because it’s lightweight. If you don’t have that, try a plastic container that strawberries are sold in.
That’s what I used! It’s not only lightweight, but it’s clear, so it’s hard to see from the side. As a bonus, the weight of the mirror holds it in place on the wall.
If that isn’t quite thick enough, you can also glue or tape some felt or other thin material to either the back of the mirror or the plastic container. Those sticky-backed chair leg protectors could work, too.
I told you there would be an unexpected item used in this DIY solution.
I didn’t say it would be a classy one. Ha!
It does reuse and repurpose, though!
The mirror has made this entire area more practical and pretty. I love that combination.
We are fortunate enough to have the space in this bedroom for a seating area, and it does regularly get used for actual sitting. It’s a cozy spot to read or sew. Despite how the pictures look, there is enough room behind the chair for me to open the dresser drawers.
The other item I feel compelled to address is the laptop. I charge this laptop on the dresser, which might seem weird. It’s an old house, and we don’t have as many outlets as we need. This is the best spot to charge this laptop right now.
However, I’d like to think I made it pretty by using a brass stand as a laptop holder.
The stand was my mother’s, and it held their wedding Bible. Not a real Bible, but a memento of their wedding, if I’m recalling correctly, that had their names printed on it. It’s hard to explain other than to say they got married in the 1970s.
Long story short, yes, you can hang a mirror on a peg rail, and I’m so happy I did it.
It was a smallish change that made a big difference in this room.
