Halloween in a Small Rural Area
Happy Halloween!
Ready for all those trick-or-treaters?
Did you eat your stash of Halloween candy and have to run buy more?
Twice.
No?
Yeah…that didn’t happen to me either.
How would you like me to treat you to some pictures of autumn and Halloween in a small, rural area to get you in the mood for tonight’s festivities?
“YES!”
Oh good. There really was only one correct answer. I’m glad you said that!
These are some pictures I took about ten days ago in a small town called Hope, New Jersey.
Before you mention it, let me tell you it was still QUITE green then. We had a seemingly endless amount of rain this summer.
Around 200 people live in Hope. I wasn’t exaggerating when I said it was small!
Despite its size, the town is home to several antique shops and a historical society. The historical society is housed in this cute, red building.
Hope Township, which is almost 19-square miles, includes a handful of unincorporated areas like the towns of Hope, Mount Hermon and Silver Lake.
That wasn’t confusing was it?! Towns and townships, oh my!
Hope Township (according to Wikipedia) was founded by the Moravians in 1769 and is considered one of the earliest planned communities in the U.S.
The Moravians are a religious group from what is now the Czech Republic and Germany.
They disbanded their planned community in the early 1800s due to financial reasons.
Thankfully, some of those homes from the 1700s still exist! One of them is on a farm located about half a mile outside of Hope. Swayze Inn Farm is a sheep farm that had the neatest Halloween decor.
I’m sure this scene is quite spooky at night.
I don’t need to find out though.
I’ll just be home eating handing out candy to trick-or-treaters instead.
Swayze Inn Farm also has the most glorious red barn.
Instead of a traditional barn quilt, they had a spooky cat on the side of their barn for Halloween.
That’s so much fun, isn’t it?
The sheep think so.
I just love how you never know what you’re going to see or learn when you take a drive through a small rural area.
Happy Halloween, everyone!
Stay safe and have fun!

Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures. The houses are beautiful. I love the ghosts for Halloween.
Have a fun night tonight giving out candy. I hope I bought enough. Having hard time leaving it alone.
