Blue and Metallic Christmas Tree

Welcome! Come, join me in my living room. I’d love to show you my blue and metallic Christmas tree. It’s a little bit rustic, a little bit glam. We’ll call it an opposites attract situation.

This year, pretty much all of the ornaments on the tree are handmade or semi-handmade, meaning I put my own spin on an existing ornament.

Truth be told, it’s more fun for me to make Christmas ornaments than to decorate with the things I make. However, decorating a Christmas tree isn’t exactly a chore.

This blue and metallic Christmas tree is decorated with all sorts of fun ornaments, most of which are reused from prior years. Opening the Christmas bins this year and seeing ornaments I made was a tiny bit like opening my door to old friends. I got a “so happy to see you” feeling. No word on whether the ornaments were happy to see me.

This year, the tree is a nesting place for shiny copper birds made out of copper house flashing.

There are folded paper tree ornaments in matte and metallic papers with a wood star topper.

Old bauble ornaments were rehabbed with paint and baking soda to make faux velvet ornaments.

Wood tree ornaments also received the faux velvet paint treatment.

There are macrame wreath ornaments, and I even filled the tree with pampas grass from our backyard. I sprayed the grass with hairspray, but the confetti of consequence will likely arrive in the form of pampas grass everywhere when I take down the tree.

For the new addition to the tree, I learned how to make kimekomi ornaments. These Japanese-style ornaments are sometimes called no-sew quilted ornaments. You know I’m not a stranger to a no-sew craft, so this was right up my alley!

While I love all my handmade ornaments, my favorite feature of this year’s blue and metallic Christmas tree is not the tree itself. It’s the mirror behind the tree.

The mirror was a recent $30 thrift store find, and I knew it was going to add to the perfect bit of ambiance to the Christmas season.

In person, the way the mirror reflects the glow of the Christmas lights is magical.

It feels like we have another window in this room because I can look up at that wall and see the backyard reflected in the mirror. I absolutely adore it.

Now, photographing Christmas trees is a tricky endeavor because part of the point is to see the entire tree.

However, like most people, I have to shuffle furniture around to make room for the Christmas tree in our living room. To get an unobstructed photo of the tree, I have to further shuffle furniture out of the way.

Generally speaking, I prefer to show you photos of how our home actually is, not a staged representation of how I’d like you to think we live. Although I will pick up dirty socks before taking any photos. No one wants things to be THAT real…not even me.

To that end, if you were to visit our home today, the doors to the sunporch would probably be open if you came on a sunny afternoon. You’d see a surprisingly comfy chair next to the tree, and there’s always a blanket draped over the arm. If you want a blanket, I have a cozy blanket for you to cuddle up with, no matter where you sit.

But, if you want a view of the Christmas tree, I’d suggest taking a seat on the couch because that’s the only spot with a direct view of the Christmas tree this year.

The tree is next to a built in window bench seat.

It won’t be too obvious, and I’m going to distract you with the offer of a drink, but if you really inspect my Christmas tree, you’ll notice that it has something in common with a patient in a hospital gown.

There’s a bare spot in the back.

That’s right! I only decorate the part of the tree you can see. It’s a bit cheeky, I know.

I’m sure I’m in good company with my fellow two-thirds tree decorators.

What do you think of my blue and metallic Christmas tree? Is your tree up and decorated this year? Do you decorate the entire thing? Let me know! You can comment on this blog post, email me here, or reach out via direct message on Instagram or Facebook.

Happy Christmas!

Your tree is so stunning! And all your lovely handmade touches really shine, making it extra special! Love the shades of blue, something fresh and different!! Something also tells me you could do something stunning with a dirty sock. And I’m here for it! 😂

I really like the combination. It’s very pretty. I only do what you can see too, I mean why would you do the back? My tree is up and almost decorated, just a few stragglers to go on. But mallee than yours because I’m old. Plus I gave the kids their ornaments when they left home and discovered I liked doing a smaller tree. No one helps me, ever 🤷🏻‍♀️we place it on asquare antique oak stand so it’s the same height as yours but no bottom third.
