Witchy Halloween Mantel – No Cost Decorating Ideas
I’ve brewed up some great, no-cost Halloween decorating ideas to share with you, and they all revolve around my witchy Halloween mantel.
I had so much fun decorating my fireplace for Halloween this year. It’s a challenge to come up with an idea that hits the right vibe for our house. Nothing gory, scary, or tacky. I know tacky is a particularly subjective term. Ha!
You probably won’t create a witchy Halloween mantel just like mine, but here are some no-cost decorating ideas that work like a charm for anyone.
Use what you already have in a new way.
It doesn’t take any magic, but it does take a bit of creative thinking to drop the idea of how you always use the decor you own, and imagine it differently. At least, it does for me.
I made the witch’s broom hanging above the mantel three years ago. I always prop it up vertically by the side of the fireplace or my front door because that’s how brooms are used – vertically – unless you’re flying them.
Hanging this broom on its side turned it into instant art. The 3-D element, since the broom is not flat, makes it even better.
If the space above your mantel is more traditionally-sized, meaning taller than it is wide, I’d hang a collection of three smaller brooms.
Go to the source – nature.
There are six brooms on my witchy Halloween mantel. I made them all with things I found in my backyard. Sticks, dried stems from daylilies, dried ornamental grass, and stems from a pepper plant that no spell could cure.
Didn’t cost me anything, and I tied them all together with twine I had on hand. Spell yeah! Free stuff for the win.
If you want to make a witch’s broom (or six) and don’t have twine, there is probably some ribbon in your gift wrapping stash you could use to secure the broom together. You can also make your own ribbon by cutting up fabric from an old shirt, towel, etc.
The flowers on the mantel are ones I clipped from the side of the road. It’s goldenrod. Were they on someone’s property? Unclear. They were in a ditch, and the county usually mows the ditch, so I figured I was just helping. Did I look suspicious walking down the side of the road carrying a pair of scissors? Probably. The things I do.
Thankfully, none of us seems to be allergic to goldenrod.
Skip the pumpkins.
It is possible to decorate for Halloween and fall without using pumpkins. There are zero pumpkins on my witchy Halloween mantel.
Depending on where you usually shop for faux or real pumpkins, you can save a small fortune this way. I have two kids. I’ve been to my fair share of pumpkin patches. I’m still financially recovering.
The floral witch’s hat in these photos was not a no-cost creation. Well, I have owned the hat for years, but I bought some faux florals to decorate it this year. It’s in the photos because it fits the theme. You know I love a theme, but more importantly, it has bewitched me. I love it, and plan to shamelessly use it at every possible opportunity. Instead of Where’s Waldo, it is going to be Where is the Witch’s Hat?
How do you like my witchy Halloween mantel? If you aren’t into Halloween, how do you feel about Halloween candy? Don’t let the cat get your tongue. Comments really do make my day. You can comment on this blog post, email me here, or reach out via direct message on Instagram or Facebook.
Happy Halloween, Witches!
