My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Part 6

Welcome back to the delightful but infrequent blog series “My Latest Thrift Store Finds.”

It’s not infrequent because I’m not thrift store shopping.

No, no, no.

Even I don’t have that much restraint.

It is an infrequent series because I forget to write about my thrift store finds unless they are part of a larger story or project. This blog series is my attempt to right (or is it write?) that wrong.

Here’s what has come home with me in the last few months.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Chess Set

Did you know chess is really popular with the middle school crowd? It has something to do with TikTok.

I don’t tik or tok, so I can’t give you any more specifics than that. I do make bad jokes though.

Anyway, this might be why finding a chess set at the thrift store was hard for me. I had been looking for one for ages because I have a middle school-aged kid who is really into chess. Either no one is giving them away right now or people were scooping them up before me.

When I found this one for $25, I didn’t even think twice before putting all its tiny pieces in my cart.

As it turns out, this particular chess set sells for up to $250 on Etsy and eBay, so $25 was a killer deal. More importantly, my kid was thrilled to finally have a chess set.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Milk Glass Candlesticks

I don’t collect milk glass but I do think it is pretty. I had never seen or noticed milk glass combined with metal until I spotted these candlesticks.

It turns out, they are all over the internet. Of course. Ha!

I don’t remember how much I paid for the candlesticks but it was probably around $7 or $8. This exact pair sells for $20 – $25 online.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Large Wooden Tool Box

Have you ever seen how much old, handmade toolboxes cost in antique stores? They are expensive! And they only get more expensive the older and more beat up the toolboxes are. We talking easily a couple of hundred dollars.

I about stopped breathing when I found this extremely large wooden toolbox for $19. NINETEEN! It’s 30 inches long and about 16 inches wide. It was in the tool section of the thrift store, not the antique section. That’s the only reason I can figure out why it was priced so low.

I really want to stuff this wood toolbox full of pumpkins for the autumn season. Wouldn’t that look cute? However, longterm, I’ll probably use this toolbox more for its intended purpose of corralling tools.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Set Of Wood Bowls

I find it hard to turn down a wooden bowl at the thrift store. When there’s a set of three? I’m a total sucker.

I got these three bowls for $10. Great deal, right?

Turns out, I really was a sucker. These bowls had some sort of gummy finish on them that was extremely difficult to remove.

Sometimes you get a deal. Sometimes the deal gets you.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Matchstick Holder

Is there a prize for repurposing a matchstick holder? If so, I’d like to nominate myself. I’m humble that way.

I found a cast iron Pennsylvania Dutch-style matchstick holder for $10 and now use it to hold chalk next to our chalkboard. It’s the perfect size to hold all of my broken chalk nubs.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Brass Clock

If you are a faithful blog reader, then you’ve already seen this thrift store find! I turned a broken brass clock into a picture frame. You can read about that here.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Vintage Ping Pong Paddles

We are very into ping pong right now. So into it that we built our own ping pong table.

When I found these vintage ping pong paddles for $6, I knew they had to come home with me.

The green handles were completely charming. I may use the handles for something else at some point, but right now they are right at home on my son’s vintage game gallery wall.

My Latest Thrift Store Finds: Wood Tray

Sometimes I buy things that my husband can make. But why? Well, when the price of a finished product is less than what the lumber alone would cost now, I figure we’re getting a good deal.

This wood tray was large, definitely handmade out of pine, and only $5.

This tray received Handy Husband’s stamp of approval because there is more than $5 worth of lumber in this tray. Not to mention the cost of his time, the cost of stain, sandpaper, etc.

The other reason he gave it his stamp of approval is that he didn’t have to make it. Ha!

I’ve been using the wood tray out in our Carriage House to corral items for making coffee and tea. It’s the perfect size for that!

All told, I spent less than $100 on all of these thrifted treasures. Sometimes dinner out for a family costs more than that these days!

I didn’t always fill my home with thrifted items but now I enjoy how unique these items make my home look while giving it a bit of soul too.
