Unique Indoor Plant Displays

I overwinter many of my porch plants (ferns, geraniums, petunias) on our sunporch, and don’t have a great way of displaying the plants that makes it easy to care for them and looks aesthetically pleasing.

First world problem, I know.

My Current Plant Display Setup:

The plants do seem to like it out here, and the photo below shows the best my current sunporch plant display has ever looked this winter.

I have a couple of boards perched on top of a seed table that we don’t use for starting seeds. Because of these boards, I can rest three plants on top of the table, so I guess we do use the table for something.

An outdoor bench is below that, holding three more plants. This bench functions as an outdoor coffee table in the winter. There’s a step stool below the bench just because it matches the room.

The million bells plant was so large that it got its own side table.

The hanging bar does function well for the ferns, but it’s hard to reach the one by the window with the current plant display arrangement.

This is Not a Complaint:

Keep in mind, these are good problems to have. This isn’t a whining session, more of a brainstorming session as this space evolves to better suit my Plant Mama needs.

Five years ago, when I first made over the sunporch, I didn’t even know overwintering was possible. I thought everyone’s summer porch plants just died from neglect by the time late August rolled around.

You mean to tell me there were real, live people who were actually still consistently watering their porch plants in August? Who were these plant heroes? Did they get a medal for their dedication?

Fast forward a few years, and I can now confirm there is no medal for keeping your porch plants alive past August. You are awarded a mixed bag of an unhealthy emotional attachment to a plant you might have bought at the grocery store, and potential blossoms in the dead of winter. Congratulations.

Ideas For Unique Indoor Plant Displays:

Here are some ideas I’m pondering to organize and display the plants on our sunporch, and I think these ideas apply to anyone, regardless of the layout of your home.

Oak Window Shelf | Etsy

If you don’t have a sunporch or deep windowsills (we don’t), this window shelf is a great idea for getting your plants close to the sun. It ships from Auburn, Georgia.

Imagine if we built something like this in our sunporch, but painted it blue to match the walls and windows. It could be great for smaller plants.

Built-Ins | via Homes and Gardens

This space featured in Homes and Gardens sure is light and happy.

There is no permanent furniture in our sunporch. Maybe I should revisit that idea?

Ladder Shelf | Walmart

This ladder shelf comes in different configurations, but I especially liked this configuration for homes with stairs. The under $25 price (currently) has me suspicious about the quality, but that’s why we have the option to return things.

Entry Table | Joy Us Garden

I did mention in a previous blog post that I want to fancy up the sunporch. Adding a console table and an ornate mirror to the space, as Nell from Joy Us Garden did, would certainly achieve that objective.

3-Tier Stand | Wayfair

The real life images from the reviews are better than this one, but a tiered shelf seems like a smart idea for our sunporch. I’d put it under the spot where the ferns hang.

Plant Oasis | Bohome Plantry

What really caught my eye about this photo was that the plants are hanging from an actual branch! Talk about bringing nature indoors.

Amish Barrel Ring Plant Holder | Walmart

This does not help me with my sunporch plant display issues, I just really like this for my front porch. I’m easily distracted, folks. Just roll with it.

If the snow outside would hurry up and melt, I could punt coming up with a solution for displaying my porch plants until the fall. I hear you should try manifesting what you hope for, so consider this my hope that spring comes soon.

Whatever display solution I do land on, it has to be adaptable to an ever-changing number and size of potted plants. This is the kind of design opportunity I love to ruminate on.

Do you have a fun way to display indoor plants? Do you want one of those barrel ring orbs for your ferns, too? Tell me everything. Comments are like blooms on a plant. They make this blogger oh so happy. You can comment on this blog post, email me here, or reach out via direct message on Instagram or Facebook.

Thank you and happy growing!
