Update: Making the Switch to Linen Bath Towels
A couple of year ago I posed the question: Should I switch to linen bath towels? You can count on me to ask the hard-hitting questions. At the time I was living in Ireland and drying clothes outside on the line was the norm. Since Ireland has a well-deserved reputation for raining A LOT, I hung clothes indoors to dry on a rack next to our radiators too. Cotton bath towels were tricky to wash in a teeny tiny washing machine (many European washing machines are smaller than their U.S. counterparts) and even trickier to dry, so that’s what led me down the rabbit hole of linen bath towels. In…
Happy List: #107
Hello, hello! I celebrated Valentine’s Day at my son’s elementary school with about 18 third graders for a class party. It was fun and chaotic. For some reason it was called a Friendship Party, not a Valentine’s Day party though. I don’t even bother asking why anymore. This is the first time in two years that we’ve had to think about Valentine’s Day cards because Valentine’s Day isn’t celebrated in school in Ireland. Are you sitting down for this next revelation? For the first time ever I did not make homemade cards. I know! Who am I?!? My son just isn’t into it like my daughter was, so we bought…
How to Mount Antlers on an Acrylic Base
I’m not a hunter. I’ve never hunted. I don’t own anything camouflage. I’ve never worn anything in a hue resembling hunter orange. Although, I did have a pair of fluorescent yellow leg warmers in 4th grade. I do own a set of deer antlers though. My brother gave them to me years ago. I don’t know where they came from. Or how old they are. I have no answers on that front. I just liked the antlers. If you’re an antler purist (is that a thing?) then stop reading now because it will definitely seem blasphemous that I painted the antlers gold at some point. What can I say? I…
DIY Wooden Heart Magnets
Since February is LOVE month, I decided it was high time I showcased a sentimental DIY that I’ve been using most of my life – DIY Wooden Heart Magnets. You know I love magnets. I use them anywhere except on my refrigerator. Weird, I know. I just really like an uncluttered refrigerator door. Open the fridge up and all bets are off though! I’ve made matchbox car magnets, Santa belt magnets and souvenir penny magnets. I come about this magnet love naturally because my mom is the one who DIY’d these wooden heart magnets. I’m guessing 30 years ago? Yes, they’ve lasted THAT long. She made these magnets and other…
Happy List: #106
Well, how is February treating you so far? My most burning question is have you bought and eaten any Valentine’s Day candy yet? I plead the fifth. This week I did a comprehensive review of how we like the sofa we purchased on Amazon. I also shared my gallery of thrifting regrets from Facebook Marketplace. In other news, I did not watch Sunday’s “big game.” Not even the commercials! I did make some “big game” food though. It seemed like I should somehow participate in the day’s activities and food is the best part! Here’s the Happy List! RESIN GEODE ART Leave it to Pinterest to let me stumble upon…
Items I Should Have Bought on Facebook Marketplace, but Didn’t
I thought it would be fun to show you my gallery of thrifting regrets today. Nothing says a “fun read” like the word regret. Ha! Do not even get me started on how much I loathe Facebook, but I do find its Marketplace to be quite useful when I’m thrifting for something in particular. It’s where I found my quirky rattan swivel chair. I still am over-the-moon about that chair, by the way. I like to ‘save’ items I’m interested in buying, but not motivated enough to leave my house that day to collect. Sometimes I watch the items to see if the price drops, but often the items are…
How We Like Our Amazon Rivet Leather Sofa
Spending a ton of money on a sofa is worrisome. Spending a ton of money on a sofa you bought online and NEVER SAT ON is the stuff of nightmares. So, of course, that’s what we did. We purchased Amazon’s Rivet Andrews Leather Sofa in July 2018 and have lived with it long enough (over 6 months) to feel comfortable sharing our experience. This is not a sponsored post, but I do participate in the Amazon Associates program. If you use one of my affiliate links to make a purchase, I get credit but it doesn’t cost you anything extra. How We Over-Thought Made Our Purchase Decision The Amazon Rivet Andrews Leather…
Happy List: #105
Happy first day of February! Nice to see you here again. I hope everyone is staying warm. Our temps have been downright frigid this week (but not as cold as Chicago) with a little dose of snow thrown in and I’m scared to get our heating bill. Ha! This week I shared how we are enjoying our winter backyard. Thank you so much for your kind comments on that post. It seems that so many of you have fond memories of ice skating as a kid! I’m pleased to report that both kids are making more progress on the ice skating front. I also shared the creative way I hung…
Wrapped String Art Using a Frame, String and Glue
What do you do when your child comes home with ANOTHER special piece of artwork and wants that artwork framed? You could punt the request until they forget and then mysteriously lose that artwork on garbage day. Ahem. Not that I would know anything about that. Or, you could IMPROVISE. Improvise is my middle name means to make something out of whatever is available. That certainly is a recurring theme around this slice of the internet and what brings us to today’s project. The art in question is bright, happy and not at all symmetrically cut. It had definitely experienced a rough ride home in a backpack. My daughter loved the…
Our Backyard in Winter
There are certain athletic pursuits I am comfortable saying aren’t for me given the high likelihood of falling and/or crashing into stationary objects. Yes, I’m speaking of sports that involve snow and ice and hurtling yourself down or across slippery surfaces at high rates of speed. That’s why I find it slightly ironic that I’m excited to share our winter ‘backyard’ with you. What looked like this in the summer… Now looks like this in the winter… That’s right! Our pond has frozen over. Also, we have neighbors! Who knew?!?! Before the grandparents start sending me messages about being careful about skating on our winter backyard, let me reassure you…
