Pine Cone Birdhouse Bookends
The other day while on a creative sojourn through Joann’s (I can sojourn now, as long as I’m back by 2:30 to meet the school bus), I decided I needed to jazz up the bookends on the shelves in our dining room. Spray painting them ‘champagne mist’ was no longer enough. Sometimes ideas and inspiration come to me in convoluted ways. I’m just thankful that this time I was in the paint-it-yourself-trinket aisle instead of the all-things-wedding aisle at the craft store. Through a few leaps of illogical logic and some creative mind-bendery, I decided I needed birdhouse bookends. I started with two of these very generic wood birdhouses (similar). I…
Labor Day
We’ve had a long 4-day weekend. We did some of this… But, I promise, the only one who passed out on the floor was this one. I’m going to soak up one more day off with our happy little family and be back to our regularly scheduled awesomeness on Wednesday. I’ve been doing some crafting and can’t wait to share it with you all! P.S. If you are interested in the kids’ Berg pedal cars, we got them on Amazon and LOVE them. P.S.S. The green blanket is the Chamois Stroller Blanket from Pottery Barn and it’s my go-to for baby presents. *affiliate links in this post* Share this:
Dear Teachers and Things That Make Me Happy: Part 3
This is one of those random posts with a little bit of this happy and a little bit of that happy. 1. Dear Teachers: You’re Not Fooling Me blog post Candice of Alamo City Moms Blog wrote a fantastic, worth-your-time post on really “seeing” your child’s teacher. Seeing the effort they put into their classroom, their lesson plans, educating your child. As she puts it, “we’re in this together” and it is so true. Photo source 2. Sarcasm Is Good For You, So Says Harvard Study Photo Source I knew it! In a nutshell, this study says when there is a baseline of trust between two people, decoding sarcastic remarks promotes…
Where’s Your Happy Place?
The Junk Whisperer has a “this is my happy place” sign on the outside of her potting shed. It does beg the question. Where is your happy place? Have you ever thought about it? I’m guessing a lot of people would say the beach or the mountains or the lake is their happy place. I used to think my happy place was standing outside the car for that 5 seconds of quiet after you buckle your screaming toddler in the car and shut their door. Of course, that 5 seconds and a few deep breaths does go by so quickly before you have to open your car door and get on with the…
A Little Bit of Yard Work Does Wonders
I might actually enjoy yard work if it wasn’t for the weeds. The ones that you pull and they keep coming back. Except now they are larger and they grow faster and I’m pretty sure they are mocking me. After a summer of battling the weeds in our front flowerbeds, I decided it was time to take more drastic measures. And, no, that would not be hiring a landscape maintenance company. (Although, that would really, really, really make my day.) I decided it was time to try laying down landscape fabric. (There is no “before” picture. It was too depressing.) For those of you with a green thumb, avert your…
Whiskey Cake
To all the cakes I’ve ever made, to all the cakes I’ve never made, there is only one cake for me. I considered calling this post “the best dessert you’ll ever shove in your mouth.” Classy, I know. I just didn’t think it was quite dramatic enough though. Sweet blessed sunshine. Up until yesterday I would have taken a pie over a cake every single time. “Uh, Alex? I’d like to change my answer.” This whiskey cake was–what’s better than amazing? That’s how this cake tasted. The recipe is actually called Jack Daniels Whiskey Cake and my aunt gave it to me eons ago. I do not know where she got the…
Skinny Jeans Embellished with Embroidery Thread
A couple of weeks ago I went to a large children’s consignment sale. I had a special pass to get into the sale the night before it opened to the general public. I arrived at the time indicated on my special pass and found a line snaked around the outside of the building to enter the sale. It was abundantly clear that I was a “consignment sale novice” because I was the only one in line without a huge laundry basket. The mamas jokingly laughed at my naivety then explained the baskets are to hold all of your loot. Some of them even had a pull-cord attached to their baskets in case…
Rosemary Garlic Artisan Bread (5 Minute)
I decided to expand my bread-making horizons. Why? Well, duh, it’s bread! Does it need further explanation? I’m still making my Dave’s Killer Bread Copycat Recipe every 5 or 6 days. That’s our every day toast and sandwich bread and I love it more now than I did when I first started making it. Truly. However, I want to learn how to make crazy good artisan bread. The kind that transports you to a sidewalk cafe in Paris with every chewy, delectable bite. Yesterday I started Googling recipes to see what was out there and how involved this process might be. Recipes and techniques were all over the board. It was hard to keep…
Coconut Popcorn
I don’t have much to share with you today…except my latest obsession. Coconut popcorn. When my husband and I wedded in a beautiful church with wood paneled walls and burnt orange carpeting some caring soul gifted us a popcorn maker. That was 16 years ago and this bad boy is one of the most beloved, hard-working kitchen gadgets we’ve ever owned. It’s also super easy and quick to make popcorn using it. Really. Now, the reason why I’m calling this recipe coconut popcorn is that I made a little discovery. (Just nod your head and tell me I’m awesome if you’ve already discovered this before me.) If you pop the…
How to Ask Your Kids About Their School Day
Hey, hey! Is your household still basking in the glow of summer? Or are you like us and summer is a distant memory? We are in the middle of week 2 of school. How long until Winter Break??? These days, it’s a good morning if mommy only yells a few times “Hurry Up! The bus will be here soon.” Sad, but true. Please tell me I’m not the only one. I saw this really cool graphic on CNN recently that showed a sampling of when school starts throughout the United States. It seems more and more schools are moving to August start dates. Interesting, right? Here’s the full CNN article. Image below…
