I Refinished Our Tongue and Groove Closet Doors and It Could Have Gone Worse

Our bedroom has original tongue and groove closet doors. When I say original I mean roughly 200 years old. I’d narrow that date down a little, but I’ve heard it’s…

    Bracing for Achilles Tendonitis

    October 20, 2014 /

I should probably issue a disclaimer. This post is not going to be pretty or home-related. There are pictures of my feet. I’m so sorry. There is a happy ending though, so there’s that. If you’ve ever read the “about me” page on this blog (it’s riveting), you’ll see I mentioned something about running, but not being a runner. I do it 3 days a week because it happens to be the most efficient and effective way for me to exercise and I do like how it makes me feel – after. The during part isn’t my most favorite part. Savory White Chicken Chili

    October 17, 2014 /

There was a day a week or so ago when the temperature felt almost chilly in Atlanta. I even put on my favorite leather boots. I was in my short sleeves and it got a little warm later in the day, especially while hiking back up the hill from the bus stop, but let’s not focus on that. The calendar says it is fall, so I’m running with it. I decided it was time for soup. It’s been so hot all summer that I haven’t made soup in ages. This is a good one too! I like this Savory White Chicken Chili recipe because it is filling, but still healthy and…

    Harvest Activities in Georgia

    October 15, 2014 /

Hello, hello! We have spent the past 4 days enjoying a long Columbus Day Weekend with a visit from the grandparents! My kids have been ecstatic to get some special time with grandma and grandpa! One of our traditions with this set of grandparents is to visit a pumpkin patch. I was worried that we’d miss out on that this year, but they were so gracious to fly out here during the month of October! On Saturday we headed out of the city to Washington Farms. Earlier this year we purchased the best strawberries to make freezer jam with there, but this was our first time partaking in all of…

Spider Hair Clips using Hand-Curled Fabric Ribbon

    October 13, 2014 /

I see a lot of blog tutorials about crafts, decorating and cooking. A lot of it is eye candy because I look and file it away in my sub-conscious for later. I’ve concluded two things. 1) There are so many, incredibly talented people out there. I am in awe. Seriously, DIYers rock! 2) I don’t have the time, money or patience to recreate 99% of the things I read. So, when I saw a recent tutorial on how to curl fabric ribbon and make spider hair clips. BAM! I was on it! Of course, I had to finish cooking dinner and wait two days to go to the craft store, but seriously,…

How to Curl Fabric Ribbon – Corkscrew Ribbon

    October 10, 2014 /

Am I the last one to know how to curl fabric ribbon? Have I been living under a rock? All of those corkscrew ribbon hair thingies that little girls wear…I could have been making those instead of spending a fortune on them. Apparently, this ribbon can also be called corker ribbon. That just sounds odd to me, so I’ll just go with corkscrew. The kicker is that it is super easy! Ridiculously easy. All you need are: 1. ribbon (duh!) 2. wood skewers 3. tape, binder clips or anything else to secure the ribbon 4. cookie sheet to place your creation on 5. An oven Secure one end of the ribbon…

Blackberry Freezer Jam using Frozen Berries

    October 8, 2014 /

Earlier this year we picked blackberries at a local Georgia farm. It was a fun, family day in 90+ degree heat! 😉 Instead of using the berries right away, they all went into the freezer using this method for freezing berries. After facing a near outage of jam (it was a close one, there was rationing happening on the lunch sandwiches), I decided it was high time to bust those blackberries out of the freezer and make some delicious Blackberry Freezer Jam.   Since the berries were in the freezer, I spread them out on a cookie sheet and let them sit on the counter for a good 30 minutes while they…

Lettered Wall – Work in Progress

    October 6, 2014 /

Do you collect things? The only thing I “collect” are playing cards from places we’ve traveled. I throw them in a big basket in our living room and they are a great conversation starter. They are also a practical reminder of places we’ve been and experienced. The irony is that I really don’t care to play cards…I just like to collect them. But let’s not delve into my issues! Lately, I realized that I have the beginnings of a collection of the letters “A” and “J” for the first initial of my name and my husband’s name. Here’s how I grouped them in our last home. I kind of miss…

Halloween Countdown Lunchbox Notes – Free Printable

    October 3, 2014 /

Update: A sweet reader told me there were some font problems with the PDF. I’ve converted the PDF to Jpeg files. This should fix the problem. If not, please let me know! Who loves Halloween? My kids sure do! I love how much fun you can have with this holiday. The anticipation is already building around our house! The costumes have been selected and now it is time to start the countdown!   I made some printable lunchbox notes that I can use to start counting down Halloween. It will be a fun switch from our day-of-the-week lunch box notes that we’ve been using. (Those things are still working so…

Spiced Apple Cider Baked Donut Holes

    October 1, 2014 /

So, the calendar says it’s fall. I’m not entirely sure the temperatures in Georgia got the memo though. Hello 80 degrees! It was time to take matters into my own hands oven.   These look like muffins since I made them in mini muffin pans. They did have more of a baked donut (or is it doughnut?) texture though. Whatever their technical classification, they were so darn good.   And remember how I said that a glaze makes everything better? Well, I think I’ve changed my mind. A dusting of cinnamon and sugar…delish! The recipe came from a site I just discovered, Sally’s Baking Addiction. The recipe calls for buttermilk,…
